Research on NMN has expanded because NAD+ concentrations decline with age in some tissues and because NAD+ participates in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and signaling. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels after NMN administration, but human data are more limited and often focus on safety, pharmacokinetics, and biomarker changes. Questions remain about oral absorption, tissue distribution, and whether changes in blood NAD+ reflect changes inside specific organs. NMN is not an approved drug, and claims about its clinical effects should be distinguished from established biochemical findings.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. The compound exists in cells as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a central redox cofactor. NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another related pyridine nucleotide, although the two compounds can converge in metabolic pathways. Its chemical formula is C11H15N2O8P, and it carries a net negative charge at physiological pH.
In the salvage pathway, NMN is generated from nicotinamide and 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate by the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase. A second route produces NMN from nicotinamide riboside through phosphorylation by nicotinamide riboside kinases. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases, often called NMNAT enzymes. This stepwise route allows cells to recycle nicotinamide and maintain NAD+ levels under changing metabolic conditions. The relative contribution of each route varies by tissue, species, and physiological state, and it remains an active area of research.
Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.

The biologically relevant form of NMN is generally the beta anomer, which is recognized by NMN adenylyltransferases. NMN is polar and water soluble, and it does not readily diffuse across lipid membranes without assistance. Whether intact NMN enters cells through a specific transporter remains an open question; some studies propose solute carrier family members, while other work favors extracellular dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by uptake. This transport and compartmentalization debate affects how researchers interpret oral administration studies. The distinction between intracellular synthesis and extracellular delivery is central to current discussion.
Terminology around NMN can be confusing because several related compounds share the vitamin B3 family. Nicotinamide riboside is a nucleoside, whereas NMN is a nucleotide with a phosphate group, and NAD+ is a dinucleotide coenzyme rather than a simple precursor. Niacin and nicotinamide are also NAD+ precursors but follow different metabolic entry points. In commercial and scientific writing, NMN usually refers to beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide unless another form is specified. Consistent nomenclature helps distinguish chemical identity from proposed biological effects.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a pyridine nucleotide that consists of a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. It is an intermediate in the salvage pathway for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, synthesis. In mammalian cells, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. Nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases then convert NMN into NAD+. The core structure and enzymatic route are well established in biochemical literature.
Chemically, NMN is described by the molecular formula C11H15N2O8P and a molecular mass near 334.22 g/mol. The beta anomer has a CAS Registry Number of 1094-61-7. It is typically supplied as a white to off-white powder for laboratory use. The molecule carries a phosphate group and a positively charged nicotinamide ring, giving it polar and water-soluble character. These properties influence how it is detected, purified, and stored in research and analytical laboratories.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. Its structure links nicotinamide to D-ribose 5-phosphate through a glycosidic bond, placing it in the pyridine nucleotide family. The compound exists in alpha and beta anomeric forms, and the beta form is the one used in NAD+ biosynthesis. NMN is not a protein or a hormone; it is a small water-soluble molecule that occurs in living cells as a metabolic intermediate.
The discovery of the athymic mouse, commonly known as the nude mouse, and that of the SCID mouse were major events that paved the way for humanized mice models. The first such mouse model was derived by backcrossing C57BL/Ka and BALB/c mice, featuring a loss of function mutation in the PRKDC gene. The PRKDC gene product is necessary for resolving breaks in DNA strands during the development of T cells and B cells. A mutation in the Foxn1 gene on chromosome 11 resulted in impaired thymus development, leading to a deficiency in mature T lymphocytes. Dysfunctional PRKDC gene leads to impaired development of T and B lymphocytes, which gives rise to severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). In spite of the efforts in developing this mouse model, poor engraftment of human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) was a major limitation that called for further advancement in the development of humanized mouse models. Nude mice were the earliest immunodeficient mouse model. These mice primarily produced IgM and had minimal or no IgA. As a result, they did not exhibit a rejection response to allogeneic tissue. Commonly utilized strains included BALB/c-nu, Swiss-nu, NC-nu, and NIH-nu, which were extensively employed in the research of immune diseases and tumors. However, due to the retention of B cells and NK cells, they were unable to fully support engraftment of human immune cells, thus making them unsuitable as an ideal humanized mouse model. The next big step in the development of humanized mice models came with transfer of the scid mutation to a non-obese diabetic mouse.
Within any crystal, there will usually be some defects. To maintain electroneutrality of the crystals, defects that involve loss of a cation will be associated with loss of an anion, i.e. these defects come in pairs. Frenkel defects consist of a cation vacancy paired with a cation interstitial and can be generated anywhere in the bulk of the crystal, occurring most commonly in compounds with a low coordination number and cations that are much smaller than the anions. Schottky defects consist of one vacancy of each type, and are generated at the surfaces of a crystal, occurring most commonly in compounds with a high coordination number and when the anions and cations are of similar size. If the cations have multiple possible oxidation states, then it is possible for cation vacancies to compensate for electron deficiencies on cation sites with higher oxidation numbers, resulting in a non-stoichiometric compound. Another non-stoichiometric possibility is the formation of an F-center, a free electron occupying an anion vacancy. When the compound has three or more ionic components, even more defect types are possible. All of these point defects can be generated via thermal vibrations and have an equilibrium concentration. Because they are energetically costly but entropically beneficial, they occur in greater concentration at higher temperatures. Once generated, these pairs of defects can diffuse mostly independently of one another, by hopping between lattice sites.
Artificially created antimatter is usable only as an energy storage medium, not as an energy source, unless future technological developments (contrary to the conservation of the baryon number, such as a CP violation in favor of antimatter) allow the conversion of ordinary matter into anti-matter. Theoretically, humans may be able to cultivate and harvest a number of naturally occurring sources of antimatter in the future. Renewable energy by converting sunlight into electricity – either directly through solar cells and concentrating solar power, or indirectly through biofuels, wind, and hydroelectric power: There is no known way for a human civilization to harness the equivalent of the Earth's total absorbed solar energy without completely covering the surface with man-made structures, which is not feasible with current technology. However, if a civilization constructed very large space-based solar power satellites, Type I power levels might become achievable—these could convert sunlight to microwave power and beam it to collectors on Earth.
is the packing fraction of the particles. This model is not very accurate for nanoparticles for it does not take into account the interfacial layer formed by the fluid around a nanoparticle. In 2006 K. C. Leong et al proposed a new model, one which took into account the existence of an interfacial layer. They did so by considering the area around a nanoparticle and stating it exists of three separate regions. Each of them with a specific but different thermal conductivity. This resulted in the following model:
To Friar John Cor, by order of the King, to make aqua vitae, VIII bolls of malt. The Exchequer Rolls' record crown income and expenditure and the quote records eight bolls of malt given to Friar John Cor to make aqua vitae over the previous year. The term aqua vitae is Latin for "water of life" and was the general term for distilled spirits. This would be enough for 1,500 bottles, which suggests that distillation was well-established by the late 15th century. The first known reference to a still for making "aquavite" in Scotland appears in the Aberdeen council registers, in a case heard in 1505 by the town's bailies concerning the inheritance of goods belonging to a chaplain named Sir Andrew Gray, who died in 1504. Among his goods was recorded (in Middle Scots) "ane stellatour for aquavite and ros wattir'". Aqua vitae (in the form of wine or spirits) was used when making gunpowder to moisten the slurry of saltpetre, charcoal and sulphur. As a drink, Scotch whisky was a favourite of King James IV of Scotland. Spirit production was first taxed by the Parliament of Scotland from January 1644, with an excise duty of 2s 8d imposed per Scots pint; instigating the illicit distilling of spirits within the country. Between the 1760s and the 1830s, a substantial unlicensed trade originated from the Highlands, forming a significant part of the region's export economy. In 1782, more than 1,000 illegal stills were seized in the Highlands: these can only have been a fraction of those in operation.

==== Accusations of Hezbollah using human shields ==== There have been claims that Hezbollah has intentionally drawn fire to Christian areas in southern Lebanon. Christians in the town of Rmaich clashed with Hezbollah due to the organization's attempts to establish military infrastructure in the town. The residents also wrote a complaint letter. On 26 March 2024, civilians in Rmaich confronted militants and rang their church bells after Hezbollah attempted to place rocket launchers in the town. Hezbollah denied trying to fire rockets from Rmaich. On 30 November 2024, the IDF said that it killed armed Hezbollah operatives near a church in southern Lebanon. A video appearing to be in the town of Khiyam, showed a tunnel shaft used to store weapons at the church. The Lebanese Kataeb Party criticized Hezbollah for allegedly storing weapons between houses stating that "Hiding weapons between houses does not support Gaza" after an IDF strike on Hezbollah infrastructure in Adloun. Rockets were still exploding about an hour after the strike was reported and the blasts lightly injured three citizens as shrapnel from the explosions flew to surrounding villages. These ammunition depots "open the door to Israeli attacks and turn the Lebanese into human shields", the Kataeb party said. According to IDF's Arabic spokesman, Avichay Adraee, Hezbollah-run yellow ambulances have been used to transport fighters and weapons.
Additionally, a new research program called ACTINET has been started in the EU to make transmutation possible on an industrial scale. According to U. S. President Bush's Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) of 2007, the United States is actively promoting research on transmutation technologies needed to markedly reduce the problem of nuclear waste treatment. There have also been theoretical studies involving the use of fusion reactors as so-called "actinide burners" where a fusion reactor plasma such as in a tokamak, could be "doped" with a small amount of the "minor" transuranic atoms which would be transmuted (meaning fissioned in the actinide case) to lighter elements upon their successive bombardment by the very high energy neutrons produced by the fusion of deuterium and tritium in the reactor. A study at MIT found that only two or three fusion reactors with parameters similar to that of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) could transmute the entire annual minor actinide production from all of the light-water reactors presently operating in the United States fleet while simultaneously generating approximately one gigawatt of power from each reactor. Opportunities for managing nuclear waste by transmutation are also being explored in linear particle accelerators.
He would subsequently be recognised as engaged in essential war work through his role in broadcasting for the BBC and documentary filmmaking, work he took up in 1941 after he and Caitlin moved to London, leaving their son with Caitlin's mother at Blashford. Thomas produced film scripts for the Strand Film Company, work which provided him with a much needed financial mainstay throughout the war years and his first regular source of income since working for the South Wales Daily Post. In February 1941, Swansea was bombed by the Luftwaffe in the Three Nights' Blitz. Castle Street was one of many streets that suffered badly; rows of shops, including the Kardomah Café, were destroyed. Thomas walked through the bombed-out shell of the town centre with his friend Bert Trick. Upset at the sight, he concluded: "Our Swansea has died". Thomas later wrote a feature programme for the radio, Return Journey, describing how: "The Kardomah Café was razed to the snow, the voices of the coffee drinkers—poets, painters, and musicians in their beginnings—all lost". The programme, produced by Philip Burton, was first broadcast on 15 June 1947. The Kardomah Café reopened on Portland Street after the war. In early 1943, Thomas began a relationship with Pamela Glendower, one of several affairs he had during his marriage. The affairs either ran out of steam or were halted after Caitlin discovered his infidelity. In March 1943, Caitlin gave birth to a daughter, Aeronwy, in London. They lived in a run-down studio in Chelsea, made up of a single large room with a curtain to separate the kitchen.
=== Emil: The Beefy Barbarian Bully === First aired: 15 October 2009 Emil is a self-proclaimed Assyrian bully who was brought to the show by his victims, Anthony and Mo. === Writing === Shonda Rhimes said in an interview that the fifth season will begin only a few days after the events in the fourth-season finale. She stated that the fifth season will see Olivia and Fitz the only people standing in a single piece, as she said "The world had been fairly blown apart for everybody except Olivia and Fitz. Everybody else was in a fairly blown apart place ... We pick up right there in that environment and we see what happens next." Rhimes continued talking about Cyrus and Mellie and their situation of not being in the White House anymore. Rhimes also confirmed that "the reconstitution" of Team OPA would happen in the fifth season, as Rhimes revealed in an interview with TVLine, as she explained that the Gladiator conceit was sidelined a bit in the fourth season to instead "healing" Olivia. She noted that "a lot of times it was just Huck and Quinn gladiating by themselves. And that wasn’t the same dynamic."
== Clinical translation == Dextran has yet to be approved for any clinical uses in drug delivery due to a wide variety of limitations including heterogeneity, undesirable side effects, and unknown biological pathways. Changes in the molecular weight of dextran have been shown to alter biological activity, indicating a need for separation and purification processes to ensure batch homogeneity. Dextran, although considered relatively safe and nontoxic in vivo, exhibits a few side effects with the most notable being thrombocytopenia and liver toxicity. The exact biological mechanisms by which dextran-based drug delivery systems act on the drug target must be elucidated as well. Dextran-based drug delivery systems have an enormous potential for clinical use in the treatment of a variety of disease states.
==== Tumoral calcinosis ==== Tumoral calcinosis is distinguished by the accumulation of calcific masses surrounding the main joints. It mainly affects teens who are otherwise in good health. Joint function may be hampered by the subcutaneous or intramuscular calcified deposits.
WAY-204688, also known as SIM-688, is a synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) inhibitor which was originated by ArQule and Wyeth and was under development by Wyeth for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, non-specific inflammation, and sepsis but was never marketed. It is a "pathway-selective" estrogen receptor (ER) ligand which inhibits NF-κB with an IC50Tooltip half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 122 nM and with maximal inhibition relative to estradiol of 94%. Inhibition of NF-κB by WAY-204688 appears to be dependent on agonism of the ERα, as it is reversed by the ERα antagonist fulvestrant, but is not dependent on the ERβ. In contrast to the case of NF-κB inhibition, WAY-204688 produces only slight elevation of creatine kinase in vitro, a measure of classical estradiol effects. It reached phase I clinical trials prior to the discontinuation of its development.

NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a naturally occurring nucleotide and an intermediate in the cellular production of NAD+.
No. NMN is a smaller precursor molecule, while NAD+ is a dinucleotide cofactor used in many reactions. Enzymes called NMNAT convert NMN into NAD+ inside cells.
This question is not fully settled. Some evidence suggests NMN may be dephosphorylated to nicotinamide riboside before uptake, while other studies propose direct transport. Tissue-specific handling in humans remains an open research area.
NMN is a naturally occurring nucleotide and an intermediate in NAD+ biosynthesis. It consists of nicotinamide attached to a ribose phosphate unit. Cells produce it through the salvage pathway.
